Obituary of Thomas G. Mongan

Please share a memory of Thomas to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Thomas G. Mongan , 48, passed away peacefully on August 1, 2019.

Born in the Bronx, NY, Tom resided in Hoboken, NJ for over 20 years.

Tom graduated from Delbarton High School, Morristown, NJ in 1989. In 1993, he received a Bachelor of Arts in Economics with a minor in French from the College of the Holy Cross, Worcester, Massachusetts. He received a community service award at graduation from Holy Cross for his work as a hospice volunteer and president of the Purple Key Society.

After graduation he initially worked for Pershing Financial Services, a division of Donaldson, Lufkin and Jenrette. He subsequently worked as a Financial Services Advisor for TIAA Financial Services, NY. During this time he pursued an MBA from Fordham University as well as CFA certification.  Most recently, Tom pursued his passion for teaching as a substitute school teacher in the Jersey City school system.

Tom is survived by his beloved father, Patrick Mongan; his devoted brother, John Mongan, and his wife, Adrienne; his dear sister, Julianne Wilson, and her husband, Gregory; and his loving godmother, Donna McNamara DeVingo, and her husband, Richard. He is also survived by his adored nieces and nephew, Catherine, Emily, Julia, Emma, Aileen, Maeve, and Owen, as well as many cherished cousins, aunts, uncles and their extended families. Tom was predeceased by his loving mother, Catherine T. Mongan in 1989.

Tom had a kind heart and an amazing sense of humor.  He was an avid Yankees and Jets fan who remained loyal despite the latter's recent downtrodden record.  He was grateful for his supportive network of friends from childhood, highschool and college who always brought happiness to his life.  As one of the longest survivors of glioblastoma, Tom inspired family and friends and will always serve as a source of hope for others.

Family and friends are welcome to gather on Sunday, August 4, 2019, from 3-7 pm, and Monday, August 5, 2019 from 8:00-9:00am at Burroughs, Kohr & Dangler Funeral Home, 106 Main St., Madison, NJ. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated for Tom on Monday, August 5, 2019, at 10:00am at Our Lady of Peace Church, 111 South St., New Providence. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Valhalla, NY.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations in Tom’s memory may be made to the American Brain Tumor Association (www.abta.org) or Delbarton’s Give a Boy a Year Program (www.delbarton.org/giving/giving-form).
